august hour recording studio

It’s been a while
Some of you might remember Guttersnipe Studio, the airplane-bungalow-housed recording studio in Kansas City. About three years ago a change in geography meant Guttersnipe I had to shutter the legendary studio. For the past three years I’ve slowly (some would say TOO slowly) been turning my new studio space in to an appropriate recording environment. I’m happy to say that the August Hour Recording Studio is finally ready to take on outside recording projects.

“Yeah, but what’s John been doing to polish his chops for the last three years?” Good question. I’ve been recording and producing mostly smaller recording and scoring projects. I just wanted to get things dialed in before I took on bands again. In fact, in the last three years I’ve done some work that has been more widely distributed than anything I produced before. Musical projects have included solo recordings with full symphonic instrumentation, music for film including an upcoming documentary project for PBS, and there have been a fair amount of stiff, corporate gigs for AT&T, Zonik (Saudi Arabia), Sprint/Embarq, Celine Dion Agency as well. So, I’ve been learning a lot and have had the chance to work with some really interesting people and projects.

“So what’s up with the new studio space?” August Hour Recording Studio features the same gear you knew from the Guttersnipe space plus a few amazing sonic additions. In terms of real-estate, we now have a 150 sq. ft. fully concrete isolation booth, 400 sq. ft control room, a separate drum room, additional isolation rooms of various treatments. We also have a full kitchen (with range, fridg, microwave, etc.), internet access, and a full bath. The studio is located on a wooded acre in South Kansas City (just south of I-435 and Holmes Rd.). The picture windows overlook a quiet yard where you’ll find foxes, deer, hawks, cardinals, and our dogs.

“But John, what are you charging for all of this?” I’ve decided to go with a completely different pricing philosophy. Because every project is different and every band has a different budget I’ve done away with per-hour billing and I’m using a per-project billing model. This means we have to talk about your project, what you want to accomplish, and most importantly what you have in your budget to spend on the recording. I’ve used this billing model in the past and I’ve found it’s a win-win for everyone. It’s music, not capitalism.

“What kinds of projects are you taking on?” That’s the best part, we can take on anything you want. Whether it’s just mixing a record on the fully-loaded MOTU Digital Performer system, or tracking mixing mastering and even designing your artwork, August Hour Studios can do it all. We even sport some serious video production capabilities if you are into shooting a video.

You can email me at jme@augusthour.com and we’ll talk about what you’re looking for. Let’s make some music, the world needs it now, more than ever.
